Gus Mickey

What did Gus want to be for Halloween?
A) A Pirate
B) Mickey Mouse
C) A Cowboy
D) Lightning McQueen

A hospital created three-piece costume.  First, blue Mickey Mouse print pajamas. Picture a soft, collared, button-up top and matching bottoms. Next, a fuzzy pair of black mouse ears that fit over his blonde hair. To complete the look, his pal Mickey Mouse accompanying him in his wheelchair. Curt and I questioned what Gus would think about trick-or-treating through the halls of the hospital. We didn't know if he would remember the two previous Halloween outings with his cousins.

Today he was enjoying his nurses who were dressed up like Waldo and Mr. Incredible. His cute mummy-decorated trick-or-treat bucket, given to him by his hospital friends, was ready for treats. Getting Gus Mickey all dressed up and ready for hospital trick-or-treating was fun for Curt and I. After a ten minute photo shoot, he was ready to see what this was all about.
We started our Halloween spook down the halls of our own unit.  The patient in front of Gus grabbed a handful of candy and put it in his bucket.  That's all it took and Gus remembered! At the next stop, he took a small treat and thanked them with his eyes. His favorite was a small plastic orange slinky. Almost all hospital personnel were dressed up to celebrate.  Gus was most impressed when he spotted Donald and Daisy Duck. We toured three different floors looking for candy before we got back to his room. The adventure completely wore him out. Back in his bed, with slinky on his finger, he fell fast asleep.

As gus slept for the afternoon, missing rehab because he was so tired, I ate his candy. Thank you Gus! I keep teasing the nurses that I'm going to put real food in his feeding tube. He would like Halloween candy in there. Curt and I know that Gus will be able to share Halloween with his cousins next year. We'll carve pumpkins and run around the neighborhood.  We are so lucky to have our little Gus Mickey and share this years Halloween with him. Happy Halloween to all our family and friends!
