Gus runs around Granny's house large and in charge. He teases the dog, scrambles through rooms, and opens every kitchen cabinet. He finds himself in exactly where Granny tells him not to be; her secret jewelry chest. Gus's fingers feel through the collection and target a small crystal jewel piece that once decorated his Great Grandma Morgan's dining room chandelier. To be able to fit more shiny objects in his hands, he pops the candy-sized crystal in his mouth. During his precious jewel raid the crystal is swallowed! "Where it go?" Gus asks with a confused eyebrow lift and raise of his palm. Something else catches his attention and he quickly forgets about the foreign item in his belly.
I imagine that's how Gus acquired his lucky charm.
During x-ray number three of Gus's lungs, the doctor found a small object showing up on the film. An octagon-shaped, metal-appearing shadow, just over 1cm. Searching his little chest for random reflecting stickers or items, the doctors were puzzled to find nothing. They repeat the x-ray and see the same results. Studying the items location they realize that Gus had swallowed something before his admittance in the hospital. I couldn't remember anything he stuck in his mouth and swallowed, but how could I monitor that. "What did you eat buddy and was is clean?" I ask knowing he can hear me. The doctors aren't concerned about it since kids swallow things all the time and are just fine. With our curiosity stewing we begin to hunt down the missing charm. Grandmas check your houses, Curt check the diapers! We'll see who finds it first. Still today the search continues and Gus will be the only one who ever knows the real story.
We believe Gus's lucky charm is a key to his success. It gave the doctors, nurses and our family something to enjoy and laugh about. Gus had a little Grandma Morgan with him the whole time and she's still with him. The chandelier crystals represent love and faith for our family. This is a great way to remember our Grandma and Gus's fight to stay with us.
Tonight Gus sleeps in a different room. Let's celebrate his transfer out of the PICU and to the Nuero Trauma Unit (NTU)! It might have been because he started to push the nurses away. (He gets that from Curt.) He is doing so well breathing on his own and his recoveries are a beautiful thing to witness. Tomorrow Gus will have another goal and challenge just like the ones he has been surpassing.
Oh I love tis story. Mom would totally be there for him. She was always "there" for all of us. And she so loved those crystals. So happy for all of you!
