"He pushes buttons!"

Gus moves his pointer finger over the star-shaped buttons of a playschool toy phone, feeling the bumps of the numbers. He grasps the side of the phone with his right hand and presses with his thumb. "One, two, three" plays the phone. "He pushes buttons!" I say so excited.  Gus's eyes slowly focus on the toy and his fingers start feeling for more number buttons. Hearing the everlasting noise of this annoying baby toy makes my heart feel so content. I never thought I would enjoy the endless Elmo voice on the toy I had once hid secretly in my house. There is excitement in my son's slight cheek lift as he shares this accomplishment with me, his daddy and his nurse.

Everyday Gus shows improvements that are unexplained and incredible. His hands and fingers can now feel his favorite toys or even pull on the tubes that access his body. His feet can barely kick the bedding away, or the nurse that is changing his diaper. His chest can move up and down more controlled and calmly. His heart beats more consistent, he has a pulse in all extremities. He can cough and move his tongue around a breathing tube that keeps his oxygen balanced. Gus's long, curled eye lashes bat when I say his name and his bright blue eyes can now focus on mine. He tells me that he loves me with an extended reach of his hand on my face.
Gus is incredible and as smart as ever. "You're out of the woods, he's going to recover!" Are we near to the day that we will hear that from the doctors?  Our faith in miracles, love for family, and this little boys fighting spirit are going to make it real. Gather the love from your heart, put Gus's name on it, and send it him.  I promise he feels the warmth of your love, thoughts and prayers. Today is a big day for Gus. The doctors are deciding if the breathing tube can be taken out. As the decision is researched, we already know that it is up to Gus to make the move. He will need the support of his friends and family that he has had all along. We love you and thank you for your continued support.
